Newborn Care

Newborn & Infant Care

For a newborn, the first two years are an important time for growth and development. Routine visits to your family physician can ensure your baby is growing and developing on schedule.

Generally, it is recommended that newborn babies be seen by a qualified physician for a Well-Baby Visit 2 to 5 days after birth and then again at 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 and 24 months. These visits are also a great time to ask any questions you may have about breastfeeding, feeding schedules, newborn sleeping basics, umbilical cord care, and any other matters concerning caring for your baby once you return home.

During your newborn care visit, you can expect that your FHMS care team will:

  • Review your baby’s delivery record.
  • Perform a head-to-toe examination that will include observing your newborn’s reflexes, skin health, hip stability, and more.
  • Record your baby’s height/length and weight measurements along with head circumference to begin tracking growth progress.
  • Perform any necessary immunizations.
